Washington: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Friday that Israel’s recent airstrikes against Iran were a unilateral move, emphasizing that the United States had no involvement in the operation. According to Rubio, Israel took these actions for self-defense, and he underlined that protecting American forces in the region remained the top priority.
At a press briefing, Rubio declared, “Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran,” adding that U.S. military personnel are being safeguarded. He stressed that while Israel deemed the strike necessary for its defense, any attempt by Iran to target U.S. interests or personnel would not be tolerated.
In response to the heightened tensions, the U.S. Department of State issued a security alert for American citizens in Israel and surrounding areas. The alert urged caution amid the rapidly changing security environment and advised the public to stay informed about ongoing developments.
Earlier that day, President Donald Trump expressed his hope that the conflict could be avoided. Speaking at a press conference, Trump remarked on his diplomatic efforts, noting that he preferred to prevent further escalation. He maintained that the U.S. remains dedicated to negotiating a diplomatic resolution to Iran’s nuclear program, insisting that Tehran must abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed that the strikes were part of a targeted military operation aimed at neutralizing what he described as an existential threat posed by Iran. Netanyahu emphasized that the operation would continue for as long as necessary to ensure Israel’s survival. Iranian state media later reported that explosions were heard in Tehran during the early hours, with authorities yet to officially identify the sources of the blasts.
This evolving situation reflects the deepening regional tensions and the potential implications for international security.
