Hyderabad: After nearly a decade, the roads in Secunderabad Cantonment are set to receive a major facelift. The Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) officials have approved Rs 20 crore, paving the way to start the long-pending repair works of main roads that were delayed due to severe financial crunch.
The decision to release Rs 20 crore was finalised during a board meeting where members cleared the proposal to fix stretches that have deteriorated over time.
The allocated funds will be utilised for resurfacing, pothole filling and other essential repairs on roads identified as being in poor condition. The initiative is expected to provide much-needed relief to commuters and residents who have been complaining about crumbling infrastructure at Secunderabad Cantonment for a long time.
The approval of funds to take up repairs has come after sustained pressure from former SCB board members and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), who had previously criticised the board for only carrying out ‘patchwork’ or partial repairs.
According to SCB data, the board maintains a network of over 400 kilometres of BT (Bitumen) roads and 104 km of CC (Cement Concrete) roads, encompassing both arterial and internal routes.
Engineering officials recommended a total of 22 heavily damaged roads across all eight wards for immediate overhaul, noting they are currently ‘unfit for commuting’.
The CEO of SCB, Arvind Kumar Dwivedi, directed the Cantonment Board engineering wing to begin the tendering process at the earliest and ensure the timely completion of the roads facelift work.
The Board, which approved the estimation proposal for the road repair works, will forward proposals to higher-ups for allocation of funds under the special grant-in-aid, officials said.
