Mancherial: Padma Sandesh Gupta, an avid animal lover, successfully completed his bicycle ride from Mancherial to holy town Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh in order to create awareness on deaths of animals by vehicles on national highways here on Wednesday. He covered a distance of over 2,700 kilometers and spent 39 days of time for this novel endeavor.
Sandesh was accorded a grand welcome by his friends and family members as he returned to home town in the afternoon. He then took out a cycle rally to mark his accomplishment in the streets of the district headquarters. He was congratulated by many for successfully completing the arduous journey, drawing laurels and facing hardships.
“I am proud to have succeeded in my attempt. The marathon cycling evoked a good response. Many voluntary organizations received me, provided shelter and food during the journey. An IPS officer of Madhya Pradesh Rizwan appreciated me for taking up the noble cause and uploaded a video of interaction on the official website of the department.” Sandesh told ‘Telangana Today.’
The animal lover, however, opined that there was poor awareness among the motorists over deaths of animals caused by road accidents. Unfortunately, a major proportion of motorists are not showing interest in burying the bodies of the animals that are crushed to death after coming under the wheels of the vehicles on national highways, he stated.
Sandesh said that his friend Veligandula Naresh, a resident of Metpalli in Jagtial district, who pedaled along with him, was forced to quit the journey after reaching temple town Varanasi due to some illness. We both covered a distance of over 1,250 kilometers. I came back to Mancherial alone. It’s a memorable experience, he shared, thanking all those who extended support to him in his unusual journey.
Buoyed by the success of this cycling, the 31-year old disclosed that he was planning to embark on a similar bike ride from Mancherial to another temple town Rameshwaram of Tamil Nadu soon. He and Naresh began their journey by their bicycles adorned with a tricolor flag on June 27 last.
