Hyderabad: Though it failed to implement the promised Six Guarantees assured to the people of Telangana, the Congress has now promised five guarantees in Maharashtra with Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy even claiming in the neighbouring State that the Telangana government had already delivered on its six major commitments to the people.
Uttam Kumar Reddy is the AICC’s Senior Observer for Maharashtra’s Marathwada region. Campaigning in support of MVA candidates in Jalna and Phulambri on Wednesday, the Minister claimed a track record for the Congress, saying it that it had kept its promises in Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka and Telangana.
“The Telangana government has already delivered on six major commitments to the people. I assure voters that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance will similarly follow through on its promises and restore democratic values in Maharashtra,” Uttam Kumar Reddy said.As part of the Congress manifesto for Maharashtra, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has announced Rs.3,000 monthly support for women and free bus travel under the Mahalakshmi Yojana. A crop loan waiver of up to Rs 3 lakh for farmers and Rs 50,000 bonus for timely loan repayments, State-wide caste census with a push to remove the 50 percent reservation cap, health insurance up to Rs 25 lakh with free medicines and up to Rs 4,000 monthly support for unemployed youth are also part of the guarantees.
Before the Assembly elections here in Telangana, the Congress had made similar promises to the people. Initially, the party had announced that crop loans of farmers would be waived off upto Rs. 2 lakh in a single installment. In sharp contrast, the loans of many farmers were waived off in three installments but not for all, with about 18 lakh farmers out of 40 lakh still running from pillar to post to get their loans waived.
Likewise, women and unemployed youth were promised a monthly assistance of Rs.2500 and Rs.4000 respectively. Even after almost 11 months in power, there is no word on these promises. Worried over the adverse impact of guarantees assured to the people, AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge had recently asked the party units to announce guarantees only according to the State’s budget. Apparently, that has had no impact on the campaign in Maharashtra, with such promises and false claims becoming a hallmark of the Congress campaign there.
