South Indian cultural association has began it’s 63rd Annual Art Festival in virtual mode on November 6. Inaugurating the festival, the president of the cultural organisation Dr S Chakravarti, IAS, narrated the activities of SICA which became a premiere cultural organisation in the twin cities.
Speaking on the occasion, N Ramesh Kumar, IAS, vice-president, stated that despite his challenging life, Tyagaraju gave priceless music as heritage. N Rajasekhar, secretary, and Dr KV Ramana, joint secretary, conducted the proceedings.
First day
The festival began with the inaugural concert by Bharat Sundar, an eminent Carnatic vocalist who won gold medal in music from Madras University in MA (music). He was accompanied by L Ramakrishnan on violin, NC Bharadwaj on mrudangam and S Krisha on ghatam. Bharat Sundar commenced the concert with a Varnam Eranapai in Thodi raga set to Aadi tala composed by Patnam Subramanya Iyer, and followed them up with many beautiful melodies before concluding with a ‘Varali Thillana’.
Second day
The second day had a vocal concert by Sandeep Narayan, an eminent artiste and disciple of Sanjay Subramanyam. He was accompanied by Anantha Krishnan on violin, Arjun Ganesh on mrudangam and on kanjira by Sunil Kumar. Sandeep began the concert with a Varnam inThodi of Patnam Subramanya Iyer ‘Eranapai’ set in Aadi tala. Thani in Mishra Chapu by Arun Ganesh on mrudangam and Sunil Kumar on Kanjira enthralled the audience. He concluded with a Thillana in Rageshri composed by Lalgudi Jayaraman. Had the concert been physical, the audience would have honoured him with a standing ovation.
Third day
The third day featured a mandolin duet by UP Raju and Nagamani from Chennai. They are accompanied by Ambur Padmanabhan on mrudangam and Trichy K Murali on ghatam. The concert commenced with a Varnam in Bhairavi ‘Viriboni’ by Pachimiriam Ayyappa Iyer. The duo chosen Sankarabharana raga for main item with pleasant ragalapana and played ‘Swararagasudha’ with enthralling swaras. Padmanabhan on mrudangam and Murali on ghatam enthralled with am impressive Thani for Aadi tala.
Fourth day
The fourth day featured a vocal recital by Amrutha Venkatesh, disciple of Parasala Ponnammal and Prince Ramavarma of Thiruvananthapuram. She was accompanied by Anantha Krishnan on violin, Arjun Ganesh on mrudangam and Dr Karthik on ghatam. She commenced with a ‘Padavarnam’ by Dr Balamurali ‘Amma Anandadayini’ in ‘Gambhiranata’. In the second half, she took an Annamayya keerthana ‘Muddugare Yasoda’ in Kuranji ragam followed by own Thillana in Surya ragam as concluding kruthi. Her excellent presentation with perfect pronunciation and punctuation with memorable sangathis and gamakas mesmerised viewers.
Fifth day
The fifth and last day of the SICA music fest had a vocal concert of Ramakrishnan Murthy, disciple of Vidwan RK Sriram Kumar. He was accompanied on violin by B Vittal Rangan, on mrudangam by Delhi S Sriram and on khanjira by BS Purushotham. Ramakrishnan began the concert with “Vande Vaasudevam”, a Sri Raga keertana of Annamacharya set to Khandachapu tala. He took up Ragam Tanam Pallavi in Kedaragowla raga with “Karunarasa kedaragowlanga” as pallavi. The entire concert impressed the audience.
