As the auspicious occasion of Sri Krishna Janmashtami approaches, devotees worldwide prepare to celebrate the divine appearance of Lord Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
This sacred day marks not merely a birth but a transcendental descent of the Lord, whose activities are beyond human comprehension.
The Supreme Lord’s Benevolent Arrival Sri Krishna Janmashtami commemorates the day Lord Krishna appeared in this material world. Unlike ordinary beings, Krishna’s birth is divine and not subject to material laws. He appeared in His four-armed Vishnu form to Devaki and Vasudeva in Kamsa’s prison, later transforming into a normal child upon His mother’s plea.
Lord Krishna descends to this world to protect the virtuous, annihilate miscreants, and re-establish the principles of righteousness.
His appearance also serves to remind conditioned souls of their true, eternal identity and their innate desire for everlasting joy and complete knowledge.
Understanding the divine nature of Krishna’s birth and deeds can liberate one from the cycle of rebirth, leading to His eternal abode.
Timeless Devotion and Sacred Observances:
Devotees observe Janmashtami with profound reverence, typically fasting until midnight, the time of Lord Krishna’s appearance. This fast can be strict (without water or grains) or more lenient, allowing
fruits, milk, or specific non-grain foods. The primary purpose of fasting is to reduce material demands and increase one’s focus on chanting Krishna’s names and engaging in His service.
Other important rituals include performing arati (lamp ceremony) for Krishna and Tulasi Devi, offering incense and flowers, and bowing to the Lord. Many also engage in reading scriptures like the Bhagavad-Gita or Srimad Bhagavatam.
Seeking Blessings Beyond Temple Walls:
For those unable to visit temples, Lord Krishna’s blessings are still accessible through heartfelt devotion. The Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is highly recommended as the Yuga Dharma (the prescribed religious practice for the current age).
Chanting this mantra – ‘Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare’– clearly and attentively, helps one constantly remember Krishna. This chanting is considered Lord Krishna’s sound incarnation in Kali Yuga.
Additionally, one can think of Krishna’s pastimes and qualities throughout the day, transforming everyday activities into acts of remembrance.
Srila Prabhupada’s Global Reach:
The international propagation of Janmashtami celebrations owes much to Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of the Hare Krishna movement. He tirelessly spread the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra globally, fulfilling a prophecy in Brahma-Vaivarta Purana about the Lord’s names being broadcast worldwide.
Prabhupada’s dedication led to the establishment of over 108 temples and the widespread distribution of over 70 devotional books, making Vedic wisdom accessible to millions. His efforts ensured that the spiritual essence of Janmashtami reached every corner of the world.
Janmashtami at Hare Krishna Golden Temple, Hyderabad:
The Hare Krishna Golden Temple in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, organises grand Janmashtami festivities. Devotees can receive darshan (sacred viewing) of Radha Govinda and Swayambhu Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy. A unique feature is the opportunity to perform unjala seva (swing service) for Chinna Krishnudu (infant Krishna) in a small cradle, free of charge.
The temple also provides free annadanam (food distribution) to thousands of visitors. This year, celebrations are expanding to new locations, including the Hare Krishna Heritage Tower in Narsingi and the Hare Krishna Cultural Center in Kandi.
May this Janmashtami bring immense joy and spiritual awakening to all. Hare Krishna!
