Khammam: Main thoroughfares and streets wore a deserted look in erstwhile Khammam district much before the lockdown period started on Wednesday.
Shop owners and vegetable sellers started closing shop at 9.30 am itself to make time for their return home. As a result, there was no movement of public or vehicles on the streets and roads by 10 am.
The police set up barricades and check-posts at main junctions, entry and exit points at district headquarters of Khammam and Kothagudem, mandal headquarters, in towns and in villages on the Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh borders to check public and vehicular movement.
Commissioner of Police Vishnu S Warrier along with senior police officials visited Yellandu cross roads and other areas inspecting enforcement of lockdown. He directed the police officials and personnel to strictly implement the lockdown and not allow any public or vehicular movement on roads.

The police said people found on roads during the lockdown period were told to go home, explaining the lockdown rules to them. On the other hand, the majority of people have welcomed the lockdown saying it was essential to contain the spread of covid-19.
“The State government has taken appropriate action by imposing a lockdown. The alarming increase in covid positive cases and deaths have created panic among the people. Now, there should be some relief in the situation,” P Rama Rao, a school teacher in Khammam, said.
