Kothagudem: Student unions in the district have demanded that the State government withdraw the proposal to relocate Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Residential Degree College for Boys, which was sanctioned for Kothagudem district, to other districts.
It may be recalled that the previous BRS regime issued GO MS No 6 on June 23, 2023, establishing 17 new Mahatma Jyothiba Phule Telangana Backward Classes Welfare Residential Degree Colleges in the State to cater to the needs of BC students, and Kothagudem College was one of them.
Speaking to Telangana Today, AISF district secretary Varka Ajith said that the college, which was supposed to be established at Kothagudem district headquarters, was made operational in the academic year 2023-24 in a dilapidated TTD satram (rest house) at Annapureddypalle, in violation of regulations.
He alleged that certain vested interests were pressuring officials and conspiring behind the scenes to shift the college to Thorrur in Mahabubabad district. As part of this scheme, first-year admissions for the current academic year are being deliberately cancelled and attempts are being made to issue transfer certificates (TCs) to existing students and send them away.
Ajith demanded that the government give up the plans to relocate the college and warned that a protest was inevitable if the district’s students were treated unfairly. A spacious government building capable of accommodating 500 students is available at the Netaji School in Ramavaram, Kothagudem, and he urged that the institution be immediately relocated there to conduct regular classes.
He warned that the student community would not remain silent if any attempt was made to relocate the educational institution in a manner that violates the students’ rights. The AISF would mobilise parents and intensify a district-wide agitation to continue the institute in Kothagudem.
