Swarnim Vijay Diwas celebrated at Parade Ground in Secunderabad

Hyderabad: India celebrated the 50th anniversary of its victory over Pakistan of the 1971 war on December 16. As part of the celebrations, a wreath laying ceremony was organised at Veerula Sainik Smarak, Army Parade Ground, Secunderabad, on Thursday. The Military Band and high ranking Army officials – attired in full ceremonial dress adorning glittering medals – attended the ceremony, and paid homage to the bravehearts.

A number of event were organised to mark the occasion as Swarnim Vijay Diwas. Following the military tradition, the first wreath at the Veerula Sainik Smarak was laid by the junior most soldier followed by various other senior officers of the station. Brigadier Abhijit Chandra, Sena Medal, Station Commander, HQ Telangana and Andhra Sub Area laid the last wreath and paid his tribute to the martyrs.


A run/walk for the veterans of 1971 war was organised at 1 EME Centre, Secunderabad and Artillery Centre, Golconda and a painting competition, on the theme of ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’, was organised for the students of Army Public Schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas. The Artillery Centre also hosted a military band display at Tank Bund to commemorate the event.

On 16 December 1971, India achieved a decisive victory over East Pakistan, in a war that the Indian Armed Forces planned, executed and carried out with precision leading to capture of over 93000 prisoners ultimately resulting in liberation of Bangladesh. The Eastern Army Commander of Pakistan, Lt Gen AAK Niazi, signed the “Instrument of Surrender”.
