In a dramatic rescue in Peddapalli district, fifteen women agricultural labourers from Goureddypet were stranded midstream while crossing the overflowing Nakkalavagu rivulet after a day's work in Mallial.
The incident took place near Nagepalli on the Manthani-Kataram main road when an autorickshaw trolley carrying the victims overturned after its steering rod broke. According to the police, the workers, who were residents of Battupalli in Manthani mandal, were on their way to Mallaram to work in chilli fields.
Four labourers, Borra Veerababu, Koram Parvathy, Chinta Sujatha and M Uma were seriously injured. They were shifted to Government General Hospital in Kothagudem.
The labourers are charging Rs.4,500 to Rs.5,000 per acre to plant paddy. However, to cut costs, some farmers were allegedly misleading the labourers by giving wrong measurements of the land.
