Nearly 60 per cent of deliveries in Telangana are conducted through C-sections, the highest in India, with studies flagging a large share as preventable. Experts warn that without policy intervention, the State will continue to top national rankings for surgical births.

Based on the National Family Health Survey-5 (2019-20), Telangana tops the nation in caesarean sections. In urban centres of Telangana, 65 per cent of pregnancies and in rural areas 59% of the pregnancies are caesarean sections.

The officials said that they would initially inspect 14 hospitals at the district centre before expanding the inspections to other areas.

For the first time in the State, since this October, C-sections being taken up in private and government hospitals have recorded a drop.
