The incident happened around 1 a.m. on National Highway 44 near Mondigutta village in Nirmal district when a truck carrying wild animals from Patna's Sanjay Gandhi Biological Park to Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta National Park overturned.
Since Manjeera Dam, constructed across river Manjeera near Sangareddy, was declared as a breeding centre for mugger crocodiles in 1978, the population has swelled to over 170 according to a survey carried out by the Forest department in 2017.
Residents say an increasing number of crocodiles are hitting the shore for basking under the sun at many locations. At times, they are venturing into agricultural fields, ponds and other water bodies as well, which has become a regular phenomenon during monsoon. During summer, crocodiles stay deep in the river.
