Elon Musk has axed entire departments at Twitter in his exercise to deeply trim its workforce by half and human rights, accessibility, AI ethics and curation and communications teams were hit the hardest.

The billionaire owner of Tesla tweeted that "activists" raising concerns about how Twitter is moderated are "trying to destroy free speech in America".

Musk met his advisors, including former PayPal executive David Sacks, to finalise a plan to fire about 3,800 workers, the Verge quoted its deputy editor Alex Heath as saying in the report.

"Twitter's current lords and peasants system for who has or doesn't have a blue checkmark is b******t," he said in a tweet.

In just the last three days, Musk has dissolved Twitter board and made himself the sole director, signalling more layoffs ahead.

Responding to a tweet from Eric Umansky, deputy managing editor of ProPublica, that said Musk was "making sure to fire people at Twitter before part of their year-end compensation kicks in on Tuesday", Musk said: "This is false."

According to The Verge, Musk requested that the Explore page which displays trending tweets and news stories, be redirected to the logged-out users visiting Twitter.com.
