This is the first post on Hussain's social media page since his death at a San Francisco hospital early last week, following complications from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a lung disease. He was 73.
Hussain recalled, "When the Padma Shri award was announced for me, it was 4 am. Someone came with a newspaper. I was performing at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai with Pandit Ravishankar ji. My father, Ustad Allah Rakha, was also sitting in the front row."
Several members of the film fraternity, including Kamal Haasan, Akshay Kumar, A. R. Rahman, Mohanlal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Hansal Mehta, and others, expressed their condolences on his passing. Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar paid tribute on social media, sharing an image of Zakir Hussain. He wrote, "Deeply saddened by the demise of Ustad Zakir Hussain Sahab. He was truly a gem of our country’s musical heritage. Om Shanti."
