Peddapalli: About 30 sheep died and 40 fell sick due to unknown reasons in Bommareddypalli of Dharmaram manal.

Shepherds from the village Kommu Kanakaiah, Kommu Rajesham, Rechaveni Mallesham, Sammeda Komuraiah and Dadi Nagaiah had about 500 sheep. Of them, about 70 sheep fell sick during the last two days and 30 died. The remaining 40 were sick, they said, adding that the worth of the dead sheep ranged from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 5 lakh.

It is not clear whether the sheep died due to consumption of toxic food or any other reason. Mandal veterinary doctor Dr Ajay Kumar on Saturday visited the village and examined the dead sheep. Ajay Kumar said that it was established in the preliminary investigation that sheep might have fallen sick due to consumption of organophosphate pesticide sprayed on the banks of agricultural fields to control weeds. This would be confirmed after further tests.
