Nalgonda: The Tourism Ministers of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh will meet soon to discuss the development of Nagarjunakonda, an island located on Nagarjuna Sagar, Tourism Minister V Srinivas Goud said on Sunday. Subsequently, the issue will be taken up with the Chief Ministers of the two States, he said.
Srinivas Goud was speaking with a group of journalists from Hyderabad who visited Buddhavanam at Nagarjuna Sagar. Buddhavanam special officer Mallepally Laxmaiah, Archeologist Shiva Nagi Reddy and Telangana Media Academic Chairman accompanied the Minister. Srinivas Goud said Telangana was known for its historic places but its rich history and culture was kept in the dark by successive governments in erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. Nagarjuna Sagar is not merely a major irrigation project, but is also a historic Buddhist place.
Stating that the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) recently declared Bhoodhan Pochampally as one of the best tourism villages in the world, he said Ramappa Temple in Warangal was also given the UNESCO World Heritage Site tag.
The works of Buddhavanam have almost been completed, and a report will be submitted to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for its inauguration, the Minister said.
After State formation, cruise facility from Nagarjuna Sagar to Srisailam and Somasila to Srisailam was launched by Telangana State Tourism Development Corporation. The State government was committed to the development of tourism sector in the State, he added.
