Hyderabad: In a major boost to medical education, Telangana government has decided to establish medical colleges in all the 33 districts of the State in the next two years. The Budget presented by Finance Minister T Harish Rao, who also holds the Health Ministry portfolio, has proposed an outlay of Rs 1,000 crore to establish new medical colleges in all the districts of Telangana.

In 2021, the State government had sanctioned eight government medical colleges at Mancherial, Ramagundam, Jagtial, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Kothagudem and Sangareddy with a cumulative capacity of 1,200 MBBS seats. The buildings for all these medical colleges are under construction and efforts are on to start them from the next academic year.

Harish Rao in the Budget speech said for this calendar year, the State government will start work to establish another eight medical colleges in Asifabad, Bhupalpally, Vikarabad, Sircilla, Jangaon, Kamareddy, Karimnagar and Khammam. In the year 2023, eight more medical colleges at Medak, Medchal, Ranga Reddy, Mulugu, Warangal, Narayanpet, Gadwal and Yadadri will be established.

At the time of State formation, there were five medical colleges in Telangana with 850 MBBS seats. Subsequently, four new medical colleges in Mahabubnagar, Nalgonda, Suryapet and Siddipet were opened taking the total number of MBBS seats to 1,450. Further, new seats were added to six out of the nine medical colleges, taking the final count of MBBS seats from 1,450 to 1,650.

Healthy Budget
• Outlay of Rs 1,000 crore set aside for the new structures
• Construction of 8 medical colleges under way in Mancherial, Ramagundam, Jagtial, Wanaparthy, Nagarkurnool, Mahabubabad, Kothagudem and Sangareddy • These colleges will start functioning from next academic year
• This year, works on 8 more colleges will be taken up at Asifabad, Bhupalpally, Vikarabad, Sircilla, Jangaon, Kamareddy, Karimnagar and Khammam
• In 2023, works on 8 medical colleges to be taken up at Medak, Medchal, Ranga Reddy, Mulugu, Warangal, Narayanpet, Gadwal and Yadadri
• At the time of State formation, there were 850 government MBBS seats, which has now gone up to 1,650
