Telangana Horticultural University distributes free chicks to SC, ST and Koya farmers
SKLTHU gave Sonali breed chicks to 150 SC/ST and 60 Koya families in Mulugu district to support rural livelihoods. Each family received 10 chicks to raise for egg and meat production. The programme aims to boost income and self-sufficiency
Hyderabad: Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTHU) organised the second phase of a free chick distribution programme for tribal families in Mulugu district.
As part of the livelihood scheme, a total of 150 Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families, along with 60 Koya families, each received 10 six-week-old Sonali breed chickens. While the first phase of the distribution took place in Mahabubabad district, this second phase was conducted in Kondaparthi, a village in Tadvai mandal, adopted by Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma.
SKLTHU Vice-Chancellor, Dr Danda Rajireddy, stated that the program was funded by the university’s allocation under the SC sub-plan.
Dr J China, the Dean of Horticulture at SKLTHU, noted that the distribution included two male and eight female chicks for each family. He explained that the Sonali breed is fast-growing, with the birds reaching a weight of 2-3 kg within two months and beginning to lay eggs from the second month. “Farmers will benefit from the sale of eggs and meat,” he said. “This scheme has been initiated to help improve the living standards of farmers.”
