Hyderabad: While the India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi, officially declared that the Southwest Monsoon hit the Kerala coast on Thursday, Telangana is still at least 3 to 4 days away from the system physically touching its borders.
An internal assessment from the IMD, Hyderabad, reveals that the monsoon will likely touch the state’s borders by June 7 or 8.
“The outer bands of the monsoon are projected to touch down in the southern districts of Telangana (the erstwhile Mahabubnagar region) first. We are hoping that after the monsoon’s touchdown, it will take at least 10 days for it (the monsoon) to cover the entire State,” a Duty Officer, IMD, Hyderabad, said.
The official revealed a highly volatile and fluid timeline for the entry and progression of the Southwest Monsoon across Telangana and clearly warned against relying strictly on linear historical weather charts.
“Even if the Southwest Monsoon enters within our projected timelines, there is always a chance of underperformance during the peak monsoon season of July and August because of the ongoing threat of El Nino,” officials said. The physical movement of the actual Southwest Monsoon strictly depends on volatile day-to-day low-level southwesterly wind currents.
“Sometimes, the monsoon tends to cover the entire state in 3 to 4 days and sometimes there is no movement, and it stays at one location for a long time,” officials said.
While the monsoon may begin on schedule, IMD officials warned that there could be sluggish progress after the initial timely arrival period.
