Telangana on high alert: IMD issues red and orange alerts as monsoon intensifies
A fresh Low-Pressure Area (LPA) over the Bay of Bengal is expected to significantly intensify monsoon activity across Telangana. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for several districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall until August 21.
Hyderabad: Telangana is on high alert as a fresh Low-Pressure Area (LPA)over the Bay of Bengal is expected to bring a significant surge in monsoon activity across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, has issued red (extremely heavy rainfall) and orange (heavy to very heavy rainfall) alerts for multiple districts of Telangana.
Under the influence of the LPA, Hyderabad and surrounding districts can expect yet another week of overcast weather conditions with moderate to heavy rainfall at different locations. The rainfall, however, in various districts, is expected to be extremely heavy to very heavy.
In the last 24 hours, while Hyderabad and its neighboring districts of Medchal-Malkajgiri and Rangareddy largely remained dry with only sporadic light to moderate showers, other parts of Telangana were heavily impacted. Several districts, particularly regions in Adilabad, recorded very heavy rainfall, with measurements ranging from 119 mm to 173 mm.
In its two-day forecast for Hyderabad, the IMD stated, “Generally cloudy sky. Moderate to heavy rain or thunderstorms with intense spells accompanied by gusty winds of 30 to 40 kmph are very likely to occur in the city. Haze or misty conditions are very likely to prevail during morning hours. Surface winds are likely to be westerlies or southwesterlies.”
Between Monday and Wednesday, almost all the districts in Telangana will either face extremely heavy rainfall (over 204.4 mm) event, heavy to very heavy (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) and heavy rainfall from 64.5 mm to 115.6 mm of rainfall.
The districts for which the IMD has issued a red alert of over 204.4 mm of rainfall for in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mulugu and Mahabubabad districts. While heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.6 mm to 204.4 mm) for Kamareddy, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Medak and Sangareddy, the IMD has also issued heavy rainfall warning from rest of the districts in Telangana.
Overall, the Hyderabad MET department has issued a heavy rainfall warning for all parts of the state until August 21.
