Hyderabad: Union Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Narendra Singh Tomar said Telangana State has emerged as a role model for the entire country in conducting online audit of local bodies and lauded the measures taken by the State government.
The Union Minister was speaking at a video conference he held with senior officials from Finance, Panchayat Raj and Audit Departments of all the States. The Union Minister said online auditing facilitates curbing misuse of funds, besides ensuring transparency and accountability.
Telangana State Audit Director Marthineni Venkateswar Rao gave a PowerPoint presentation during the conference. During the 2019-20 audit year, of the 12,769 gram panchayats in the State, online audit was conducted in 5,174 gram panchayats and reports were generated accordingly, he said.
As per the instructions of the Finance Department, Panchayat Raj and Audit Departments worked in coordination in the State. Gram panchayat-wise User IDs were created and the same were synchronised with auditors’ User IDs and online audit was conducted successfully, he explained. For the 2020-21 audit year, online audit of 12,769 gram panchayats had already commenced, he added.
Union Panchayat Raj Secretary Sunil Kumar wanted all other States to emulate Telangana and conduct online auditing of all gram panchayats. To ensure 100 per cent online audit of gram panchayats in other States, measures being taken by the Telangana government will be replicated, said Audit online Chairman Viswanath. The Union Minister appreciated the PowerPoint presentation made by the Telangana government. He later introduced the National Institute of Rural Development’s social audit guidelines.
