Telangana sees surge in farmer suicides, says Rythu Swarajya Vedika
Farmer suicides in Telangana rose to 283 in 2025, up from 256 the previous year, according to Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV). The organisation, which tracks suicides through news reports and volunteer inputs, attributed the increase to heavy and untimely rains, repeated crop losses, and lack of compensation.
Sangareddy: Heavy and untimely rains and lack of support to farming fraternity has increased the number of farmer suicides across Telangana in 2025 compared to the previous year, according to the Rythu Swarajya Vedika (RSV), which has been monitoring farmer suicides in the State.
As per the Vedika’s calculations, 283 farmers died by suicide until December 25 in the State this year compared to 256 in 2024. Based on news reports published in vernacular dailies and with the support of volunteers, the RSV maintains farmer suicide data every year. The number may be slightly higher because some cases go unreported.
The State recorded one of the heaviest rainfalls this year, causing crop losses multiple times. Adilabad, Siddipet and Medak districts recorded the highest number of suicides, the Vedika said, stating that these three districts together recorded nearly 30 per cent of total suicides reported this year.
While Adilabad recorded 30 suicides in the last 12 months, Siddipet and Medak reported 29 and 25 suicides respectively. Siddipet and Medak districts suffered crop losses at least four times this year due to heavy and untimely rains.
However, farmers were given no compensation so far though Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy announced it every time the farmers suffered losses. The farmers were struggling to raise investment for the Yasangi crop as the Rythu Bharosa assistance too was delayed.
Pointing out that the the Congress government had failed to keep promises made for the farming fraternity including Rs 15,000 under Rythu Bharosa, crop loan waiver of Rs 2 lakh, bonus for all crops and various supporting measures to tenant farmers, B Kondal Reddy of RSV demanded that the government keep its promises to stop farmer suicides.
