Hyderabad: As a large number of in-service candidates could not qualify the Telangana Teacher Eligibility Test (TGTET) January 2026, the Telangana State United Teachers’ Federation (TS UTF) on Thursday urged the State government to reduce the qualifying marks or grant 5-20 additional weightage marks.

In a representation submitted to Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao, TS UTF president Chava Ravi and general secretary A Venkati sought reduction of qualifying marks to 40 percent for general and BC, and 30 percent for SC/ST/PwD categories (or suitably lowered slab-wise).

If not, the teachers wanted the government to add 5-20 weightage marks proportional to years of service to the TET scores for qualification purposes.

The teachers backed their proposal citing Bihar, which recently reduced its TET qualifying marks to 50 percent (general), 45.5 percent (OBC), 42.5 percent (EBC), and 40 percent (SC/ST/PwD/Women). They also cited the Tamil Nadu government’s decision to lower its TET qualifying marks by 5 percent for BC/MBC/PwD categories and up to 15 percent for SC/ST to support teachers.

The move from the TS UTF comes following a large number of teachers failing to qualify the TET January 2026. These teachers, according to the TS UTF, faced significant difficulties due to advanced age, decades of service in challenging conditions, and the demands of the examination format after a long gap since their initial qualifications.

Meanwhile, the TS UTF requested the government to successfully implement the employees health scheme (EHS). The scheme should be administered and maintained exclusively by an independent health care trust under the direct supervision of the government, the TS UTF said.
