Hyderabad: For the first time, the officials of Irrigation department are drawing water from backwaters of Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) through reverse pumping to supply for over 70 mandals in Kalwakurthy and its surrounding areas under Mission Bhagiratha scheme.
The water from NSP backwaters will be pumped in reserve direction to Srisailam reservoir. From Srisailam reservoir backwaters, water will be brought to Yellur reservoir of Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation Scheme and supply drinking water to 70 mandals under Mission Bhagiratha.
On an average, 240 cusecs of water will be utilized to supply drinking water to villagers daily.
The decision to get water from NSP to Yellur reservoir from Srisailam backwaters was taken by an expert committee since the water levels in Srisailam reached dead storage level. This initiative will meet the drinking water requirement of people from April to July till the State witnesses rains during the coming monsoon.
The decision of getting water from NSP brought much needed relief for officials, who were confused on supplying drinking water to villagers as Srisailam reservoir reached dead storage.
Since four TMC of water was required to meet the drinking water requirements of villagers in Kalwakurthy for the next four months, officials made arrangements to draw 0.5 TMC of water from NSP every day, officials said.
The reverse pumping of water from NSP was started from Wednesday in the presence of officials of Irrigation and TSGenco. Excluding evaporation losses while getting water to Yellur reservoir, four TMC of water from NSP would be sufficient to meet the requirements till July, officials added.
