Hyderabad: The Telugu film fraternity and countless fans woke up to hear heartbreaking news on Sunday, July 13. Iconic actor Kota Srinivasa Rao breathed his last at 4 AM at his residence in Hyderabad, following a prolonged illness. He was 83.
Known for his powerful screen presence and unforgettable characters, Kota Srinivasa Rao leaves behind an irreplaceable void in the Indian film industry. For nearly five decades, his journey on stage and screen has inspired countless actors and brought smiles, tears, and reflection to millions of film lovers.
As Wikipedia mentions, Kota was born on July 10, 1942, in Kankipadu, Andhra Pradesh, Rao’s early life was far from the arc lights. His father, Seetha Rama Anjaneyulu, was a respected doctor, and young Kota once dreamed of following the same path. However, destiny had other plans. Drawn to the stage during his college days, he discovered an unwavering passion for acting: a passion that would define his entire life.
Before stepping into films, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and Wikipedia credits that while he was working as a State Bank employee, the artist within him found its true calling in theatre, and soon the big screen beckoned. His debut came in 1978 with Pranam Khareedu, and there was no looking back.
Kota Srinivasa Rao’s filmography is nothing short of staggering, with over 750 feature films across Telugu, Tamil, Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam languages. He was one of the rare actors who could make the audience love, hate, fear, or laugh with just a glance or a word. His ability to switch seamlessly from villainous roles to comic and character parts was legendary.
Some of his finest performances remain etched in people’s minds: Aa Naluguru, Siva, Aha Naa Pellanta, Bommarillu, Attarintiki Daredi, Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule, Rakta Charitra, Gabbar Singh and so many more. Each role was a masterclass in acting, proof that Kota didn’t just play characters, he lived them.
Throughout his career, he was honoured with nine Nandi Awards in categories spanning villain, character actor, and supporting actor. In 2012, he won the SIIMA Award for his role in Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum. In 2015, the Government of India recognised his immense contribution to Indian cinema with the Padma Shri: a moment of pride not just for him but for the entire Telugu film fraternity.
Beyond films, Kota Srinivasa Rao also left his mark in politics. He served as an MLA for Vijayawada East from 1999 to 2004, showing his commitment to public service off-screen too. He was known for being frank, grounded, and deeply connected to his roots, qualities that made him endearing to many who knew him personally.
Off the camera, Srinivas was a devoted family man. He was married to Rukmini and is survived by his two daughters. His only son, Kota Venkata Anjaneya Prasad, tragically died in a road accident in 2010. The pain of that loss never left him, but he continued to pour his heart into his work, perhaps as a way to keep moving forward.
Many may not know that the versatile actor also lent his voice as a dubbing artist for Tamil actors like Goundamani and Manivannan in popular Telugu dubbed films. His unique voice brought a special energy to the characters he dubbed for. He even showcased his love for music with songs like “Ori Naayano” in Sisindri and “Mandu Babulam” in Gabbar Singh, which are still fondly remembered.
