Hyderabad: The surgeons at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) have saved the life of a five-year-old boy from Hyderabad, who was suffering from thalassemia by taking-up bone marrow transplantation.

The youngster was suffering from a severe form of thalassemia and the hospital transfused 77 units of blood as part of blood transfusion. He also was suffering from abdomen distention with pain and severe constipation. The child’s liver, heart, pancreas and other vital organs were getting impacted due to iron deposition, and further delay could have led to liver or heart failure, doctors said.

“We could not get a 100 per cent matched donor. However, the boy’s father was a 50 per cent match. Due to deteriorating medical condition, we conducted the bone marrow transplantation and after almost three months of observation, the boy is now completely healthy,” said hospital’s Head, Stem Cell and Bone Marrow Transplantation, Dr. Narender Kumar Thota.

“Bone marrow transplantation is the only treatment for these types of problems. Timely detection and proper treatment will enable such patients to lead a normal and quality life,” he added.
