Hyderabad: The Haritha Nidhi initiative, aimed at effective implementation of ‘Telangana Ku Haritha Haram’ afforestation programme is being highly appreciated by people from all walks of life.
Continuous efforts of the State government through Haritha Haram initiative have increased the amount of tree cover in the Telangana from 24 to 33 per cent. The Haritha Nidhi programme, the brain child of Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao, will further increase the green cover across Telangana in a sustainable way, they pointed out.
“I have taken part in many plantation drives, including Haritha Haram,” shares Vedam Vamshi, a budding musician and founder of Bubble Records, adding, “While planting trees is imperative, it is also very important to ensure that they are nurtured and grow up to be a beautiful tree. I hope this initiative increases the number of plantation drives in the State and also makes people more aware about the cause.”
Apart from the fact that Haritha Nidhi will help finance the plantation drives, citizens are also happy that the initiative will see active participation from the governing class as well. Supriya Singh, a working professional, who has been taking part in several plantation drives, shares, “I really like the idea that the responsibility of raising this fund is not on the shoulders of citizens alone. Both the politicians and administrative officials along with all other government employees will also contribute towards the initiative every month. I really appreciate the thought process of the government.”
Acknowledging the positive impact that Haritha Haram had made, environmentalist and founder of The Rainwater Project, Kalpana Ramesh, says, “The difference can be seen by everyone. Not just the cities but the roadsides, institutional premises, religious places, colonies and even the industrial parks are greener as compared to a few years back. Afforestation helps in several ways, and one cause that is close to me is that it helps replenish the groundwater levels.”
She adds, “However, apart from planting trees and collecting funds, we will also have to allocate responsibility for nurturing the saplings planted, so that no plant dies. I feel that will help the State government grow more trees.”
