Nalgonda: After farmers, truck drivers are now protesting the inordinate delay in unloading maize stocks in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.
Drivers said the problem has persisted for the past week. They alleged that officials failed to provide even basic facilities such as food and drinking water while they waited for the stocks to be unloaded.
The State government procured nearly 8,000 metric tonnes of maize harvested in Khammam district. The stocks were transported in trucks to rented warehouses at Nagireddypalli in Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district.
However, the warehouse owner reportedly cited a shortage of hamalis to unload the maize. As a result, nearly 250 trucks have remained stranded for a week along both sides of the Bhongir–Chityala State Highway, stretching for several kilometres.
Angered over the delay, truck drivers staged a protest by parking a maize-laden vehicle across the Bhongir–Chityala highway.
The drivers alleged that no official had visited the spot even after a week to resolve the issue. “We are struggling for food and water in the scorching heat,” they complained.
On Saturday, some drivers reportedly fell at the feet of police personnel, pleading for help. They also said the prolonged delay and heavy loads were causing air bubbles in the tyres of the parked trucks.
