Hyderabad: Following the demand for firewood for funerals on account of increasing covid deaths, the Telangana State Forest Development Corporation on Tuesday decided to provide 1,000 tonne of wood to crematoriums in and around Hyderabad.
“A decision to this effect was taken on humanitarian grounds and to do our bit for the society during the Covid-19 pandemic,” the Corporation Chairman Vanteru Pratap Reddy said.
There have been reports in the media about the demand for wood in crematoriums due to increasing Covid-19 deaths in the State, he said. The TSFDC takes up extensive plantation of saplings every year. The Corporation sells the wood to different paper mills and the leftover stock is now being offered free to municipalities in and around Hyderabad, officials said.
The increasing demand for wood had badly affected the poor, who are finding it difficult to bear the funeral costs. Considering all these factors, the Corporation decided to provide wood worth Rs 20 lakh free to crematoriums in municipalities, Pratap Reddy said. The distribution of wood would be taken up in coordination with GHMC officials and others in neighbouring Urban Local Bodies (ULBs), Corporation vice Chairman G. Chandrashekhar Reddy said.
About 350 tonne of wood was available in Ranga Reddy region, 400 tonne in Khammam-Satupalli-Aswaraopeta-Bhadrachalam division, 86 tonne in Mancherial-Kagaznagar division and 20 tonne in Warangal division, he said. The wood would be supplied to Amberpet, Bansilalpet, Asifnagar and ESI crematoriums this week, he said, adding that the poor can approach local Municipal officials for wood.
He said the Lorry Owners Associations too had extended its support for transportation of the wood.
