Urea shortage triggers fight among women farmers in Mahabubabad
Tension prevailed in Mahabubabad as two women farmers fought in a queue for urea tokens, highlighting the acute fertiliser shortage. Farmers alleged irregular distribution at Agros centres and staged protests, while a video of the clash went viral on social media
Two women clashed with each other for urea tokens at Mahabubabad on Friday.
Mahabubabad: Lack of urea and waiting for long hours in queues for days together compelled farmers to fight with each other to get urea.
In an incident in Mahabubabad town on Friday, two women farmers resorted to fisticuffs while standing in a queue for urea tokens. The women punched and dragged each other by holding their hair, much to the shock of onlookers.
Even though people around them tried to stop the fight, they continued until two men intervened. Women and men in large numbers waited in a queue at Agros Rythu Seva Kendra at Vivekananda Centre in the town.
A minor scuffle broke out as farmers in the queue pushed each other, leading to the fight among the women. A video clip of the fight went viral on social media, with many commenting that the Congress government, which made women fight for seats in RTC buses under the free travel scheme, was now making them fight for urea.
In another incident in the town, farmers staged a protest at Agros Rythu Seva Kendra near the RTC bus stand. The farmers complained that for the past one month, they had been making rounds of PACS offices and Agros centres for urea but were unable to get it.
A farmer told the media that they came to the Seva Kendra at 3 o’clock in the morning, but its organisers distributed just 20 bags of urea to the farmers they knew and then closed the shutters, asking the others to come on Saturday.
