Kothagudem: The best contribution a person could make to the society’s well being was planting a sapling, suggested the green crusader Vanajeevi Ramaiah.

He inaugurated a three-day medicinal plants exhibition at Ramavaram in Kothagudem on Tuesday. One has to gain knowledge of plants in his or her surroundings and must plant a sapling just to cherish the sense of gratification it gives, he said.

Ramaiah stated that spiritual thinking and ‘green thinking’ were the two important things people have to cultivate for creating a better society. Schools should have a class to educate pupils on spreading green cover.

He appreciated Rayi Venkataiah also called as Mokkala Venkataiah who was organising medicinal plants exhibition. Such exhibitions would help to create awareness among the public about the plants and their healing properties.

The green crusader expressed pleasure at Telangana topping the green chart in the country during 2019-20 and getting official acknowledgement from the Centre as the leader State with its afforestation initiative, Telangana Ku Haritha Haram.

Dr. KY Ramachandra Rao, a noted naturopath and the chairman of Siddartha Yoga Vidyalayam, in his address stressed on the need of protecting and propagating medicinal plants for the benefit of future generations.

He lauded Venkataiah for preserving the medicinal plants and suggested conducting exhibitions at all district headquarters, schools and colleges. He assured to organise medicinal plants exhibition at the naturopathy ashrams he runs at Nelakondapalli in Khammam and Hyderabad.

Nature has a great treasure of plants with medicinal qualities and they could cure innumerable ailments. Everyone has to respect the life-giving and nurturing aspects of mother nature. Any act against nature would be detrimental to human well being, he averred.

Vekataiah in his address explained that there were around 500 varieties of medicinal plants with a tab giving their scientific name and medicinal usages were on display at the exhibition, which was aimed at underlining the importance of medicinal plants and create a ‘Green Pharmacy’.

He stressed on the need of protecting medicinal plants from extinction due to various reasons.

He called upon the younger generation to take the responsibility of planting saplings, protecting the forests to reduce pollution.

Kothagudem Municipal Chairperson K Seetalakshmi, Annam Foundation Chairman, Annam Srinivasa Rao, noted doctor Vasireddy Ramesh Babu and a social activist K Venugopal also spoke.

Krishi Vignan Kendra Programme Coordinator Lakshmi Narayanamma, Swarna Bharati School principal K Sailaja, Siddartha Yoga Vidyalayam Coordinator G Suguna Rao, a green activist Srirangam Sampath and others were present.
