Hyderabad: Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University, which is grappling with a severe financial crisis, is depending on Osmania University (OU) even to meet its day-to-day expenses and staff salaries.

This comes as the Telangana Congress government, which allocated Rs 100 crore for operational expenses, has failed to release the funds, leaving the women’s university in financial distress.

So far, the OU has released Rs 4 crore, with Rs 1 crore per month to pay the salaries of professors, contract staff and outsourced employees in the last three-four months.

The previous BRS government had upgraded OU College for Women, popularly known as Koti Women’s College, into Telangana’s first Women’s University, which offers 31 UG courses with an intake of 1,850 and 37 PG courses with 997 seats.

In the State budget for 2026, the Congress government had allocated Rs 500 crore to the university, with Rs 400 crore towards the construction of hostels and an academic block, and Rs 100 crore for operational expenses.

While the development works commenced, the government has not released the money meant for operational expenses. In addition, the university’s Rs 15 crore fee reimbursement arrears are pending from the government.

Further, the varsity is unable to generate the required internal revenue from sources such as examination fees and self-finance course tuition fees to cater to operational needs. About Rs 2 crore a month is required to pay the salaries of regular employees, contract staff and outsourcing staff.

Currently, the internal revenue suffices to pay the salaries of outsourcing and contract employees and other staff. Given the financial hardships, an additional fee of Rs 1,200 is being imposed on students admitted to undergraduate courses.

Acknowledging the issue, Veeranari Chakali Ilamma Women’s University Vice Chancellor Prof. Surya Dhanunjay said the university has been facing financial difficulties, including difficulties in paying staff salaries.

“We will repay the money to OU. We are trying our best to get the Rs 100 crore due from the government. Even if the fee reimbursement dues are released, it will provide us some relief. We hope to receive support from the government in the coming days,” she said.

A senior OU official said the government wrote a letter to the OU, asking it to pay the women’s university staff salaries. “Since the Rs 100 crore sanctioned amount is not released, the government asked us to pay the women’s university’s monthly expenses. The money will be repaid to the OU,” the official added.
