When AI speaks for celebrities: The growing chaos of AI-generated videos on internet
Audiences who primarily consume content through social media are left perplexed with growing chaos of AI-generated content which almost blurrs the lines between reality and fabrication
Hyderabad: In today’s digital era, where everyone is hooked on short-video formats, popularly known as reels, a new kind of confusion has emerged—determining whether a video is authentic or AI-generated.
Audiences who primarily consume content through social media are increasingly perplexed by the growing chaos of AI-generated content, which almost blurs the lines between reality and fabrication.
These videos often feature actors, sportspersons, and businesspersons appearing in interviews and commenting on various topics, leaving audiences debating their authenticity. On several occasions, the videos seem so realistic that even celebrities come under scrutiny for remarks they never made.
One such example is a viral video of businessman Elon Musk circulating online, in which he allegedly claims that his company’s Tesla ‘self-driving cars’ are actually being remotely operated by employees in India.
In the video, he says, “There is nothing like self-driving or autopilot in Tesla. You think a little robot is doing all that? What’s actually happening is that every Tesla has a live camera running, and there’s an employee in India for every car whose only job is to, you know, drive the car for the Tesla owner. The robot isn’t deciding whether to hit the old lady or the kid—that’s the Indian guy’s call.”
This AI-generated video, which was posted by an Instagram page called ‘Nobodyeversaidthis,’ appears highly convincing—only for viewers to later realize it is fabricated.
In another instance, popular actor R. Madhavan shared that he was duped by an AI-generated video of footballer Cristiano Ronaldo praising Virat Kohli.
Speaking in an interview with a leading news channel, the actor revealed that the video looked so realistic and convincing that he had even shared it on his social media, only to realize his mistake when Anushka Sharma reached out and clarified the truth.
Although several social media pages that generate AI videos of celebrities include a disclaimer in the caption, many others post such deepfakes without any clarification, leading to unnecessary confusion online.
While some AI-generated videos of celebrities may be harmless and bring joy and laughter to their fans, many internet users emphasize the need for authenticity and accountability before such content is shared on the internet.
