Hyderabad: Get ready for a breathtaking astronomical event this weekend in Hyderabad. A ‘Blood Moon’ is all set to illuminate the skies, providing a unique opportunity for amateur astronomers and the general public to witness the celestial spectacle on September 7.

If the weather permits and skies are clear, one can witness the moon turning deep red, evoking a sense of drama and mystery. The gradual but dramatic transformation of the silver-white moon into reddish-orange colour is due to a total lunar eclipse. The eclipse is scheduled to start on Sunday at 8.58 pm and continue until 2.25 am on Monday.

In the past, people often missed out on such celestial events due to their partial nature. However, this time, the total lunar eclipse is expected to be visible across all Indian cities. Based on reports and observations from various sources, the beautiful reddish ‘Blood Moon’ phase is expected to last nearly 80 minutes.

Why Blood Moon?

As Earth, during a total lunar eclipse, passes directly between the sun and moon, it casts a shadow that completely covers the moon. The moon, instead of disappearing completely, is illuminated by the sunlight, which is filtered and bent by the Earth’s atmosphere. Essentially, the moon gets illuminated by the dim, reddish glow from the sun.

Key timings:

* Eclipse begins at 8.58 pm on Sunday

* Blood moon phase will start at around 11 pm

* Lunar eclipse will end by 12.22 am on Monday

* Eclipse ends at 2.25 am on Monday
