Peddapalli: The dark underground mines of Singareni Collieries are no longer a men-only domain. Women have stepped in, taking charge in one of the most challenging work environments in the country.
From operating in underground mines to handling managerial responsibilities, women employees of Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) are breaking stereotypes and proving their mettle.
To empower women in the mining sector, promote equal opportunities, and ensure effective use of human resources, SCCL has been steadily increasing women’s recruitment. For the first time in its history, women officers were appointed to work in underground coal mines in December 2024. So far, around 2,000 women have joined the company in different capacities.
Those recruited as management trainees in Mining, Electrical, and Mechanical categories are working as under managers in underground mines. Others are serving in workshops, GM offices, stores, and various departments.
Taking the initiative further, SCCL has now decided to permit women to operate heavy machinery in open cast mines. A circular was recently issued to all mines and departments, making women working as General Assistants or Badili workers, below 35 years of age and with a minimum of Class VII education, eligible to apply for operator posts.
In another first, a 13-member women’s rescue team has been formed to take part in mine rescue operations. The team underwent 14 days of specialised training in July this year.
While women are adapting to their roles and carrying out duties without difficulty, those posted in underground mines continue to face hardships due to the absence of washrooms. Trade unions have urged SCCL management to construct washrooms and appoint scavengers in underground mines to improve sanitation facilities.
