Sangareddy: The villagers of Sheri Thanda, which was in news for electing all the women in grama panchayat election five years ago, are struggling for the last 15 days after a disruption of water supply to the village. Since there was no other water source in the village even to provide water to cattle, the villagers have been walking to an agriculture borewell two kilometres away from the village. The villagers have been spending half of their time every day just to fetch water.
Speaking to Telangana Today, former sarpanch Samki Bai Keluth said Mission Bhagiratha officials had not responded though they had submitted multiple complaints during the fortnight. Since the village set an example by electing all women to the grama panchayat, the then Collector V Hanumantha Rao too had visited the remote village located in Narayankhed mandal. He took up a number of works by adopting the village inspired by the villagers’ commitment to women empowerment.
Samki Bai said they had laid CC roads, installed flood lights, built a panchayat office, an Anganwadi centre, a school, a Vaikunta Dhamam and a Palle Prakruthi Vanam. She said the village underwent a transformation just five years after it was created, but everything changed after Congress came to power.
“There is no proper response from officials or elected representatives though they know our struggles,” she lamented.
“We were experiencing the days before 2014 when getting a pot of water was a struggle for women here. However, former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had changed the face of Narayankhed with a host of development works apart from supplying drinking water to every nook and corner ending the woes of Narayankhed’s women,” she said.
Villagers urged Mission Bhagiratha officials and Narayankhed Congress MLA Patlolla Sanjeeva Reddy to act immediately to put an end to their woes.
