Hyderabad: Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has announced a complete ban on plastic usage across all its operational areas, including its Hyderabad office. The decision was taken to mark this year’s World Environment Day, aligning with the global theme: “Let’s put an end to plastic pollution globally.”
While participating in a plantation drive held at the Singareni Bhavan office premises, SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N Balaram made the announcement, emphasizing that plastic bottles must not be used under any circumstances. He stated that the company had already implemented several eco-friendly initiatives and that plastic usage had reduced in some areas.
However, in line with this year’s global theme, SCCL is now enforcing a complete ban on plastic items such as bottles, plates, and similar materials across all its offices, mines, and departments. Balaram appealed to all officials, employees, and workers to support the initiative and advised them to reduce plastic use even at home.
He also shared that he has personally planted over 19,000 saplings across Singareni areas, underscoring his personal commitment to environmental conservation. Inspired by his efforts, the company’s directors and employees have actively taken up tree plantation, which he described as a positive development.
Balaram urged every individual to plant at least three saplings, adding that SCCL would distribute saplings free of cost to interested individuals. He noted that three decades ago, temperatures in Singareni regions used to rise above 50 degrees Celsius during summer. Now, thanks to extensive plantation efforts, it has come down to around 40 degrees Celsius.
In contrast, in Naini, Angul district of Odisha, where SCCL operates a coal mine, locals have reported temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. To address this, Singareni is preparing to undertake large-scale plantation drives in that area as well.
