Nirmal: World Sparrow Day was observed by Prakriti Mitra, a Mancherial-based voluntary organisation run by retired teacher Gundeti Yogeshwar, here on Friday. Telangana Forest Development Corporation plantation manager G Suresh Kumar was the chief guest at an event held to mark the occasion.
Suresh Kumar said sparrows play a vital role in protecting the environment by consuming insects. He urged people to feed and provide shelter to the birds to help conserve the species.
Yogeshwar advised the public to keep grains and water for the birds. He also called on people to adopt a lifestyle that does not harm the environment, adding that protecting birds is akin to protecting nature.
Earlier, Yogeshwar organised an exhibition of sparrow nests and food to create awareness among the public. He displayed nests made of bamboo, grass and clay, along with grains consumed by the birds. Placards carrying slogans on protecting birds and nature were among the highlights of the exhibition.
