Hyderabad: The 800 MW Unit-5 of the Yadadri Thermal Power Plant has been successfully synchronised with the grid, marking a key milestone for the 4,000 MW project, on the festive occasion of Dasara. Meanwhile, Coal India has agreed in principle to supply the plant with 50 lakh tonnes of coal annually from Odisha, amid ongoing power crisis.
Taking to X, BRS working president KT Rama Rao welcomed the synchronisation, crediting the party president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao’s vision for the State’s power sector transformation. He said Yadadri, a mega project with a Rs 20,400-crore order to BHEL, was a symbol of Telangana’s expanding power generation capacity. He stated that the State’s installed power capacity had increased from 7,778 MW in 2014 to nearly 20,000 MW over a decade under the BRS government.
Meanwhile, Coal India has agreed in principle to supply coal to Yadadri from Mahanadi Coalfields in Odisha, as Singareni Collieries Company Limited has informed Telangana GENCO that the required G-9 grade coal was not being produced in its mines.
GENCO CMD Harish and Coal India Director Nagya are scheduled to visit Delhi on Wednesday for final discussions on the supply agreement. The source mines and commencement date are yet to be finalised. At present, limited quantities are being supplied from Singareni’s Naini mine in Odisha, but the arrangement cannot continue long-term without a formal agreement. Currently, the plant has coal stock for next five days.
