Kothagudem: As many as 15 students studying at Mahatma Jyotiba Phule BC Gurukul (Girls) at Manuguru in the district fell ill after eating spoiled food.
It was said that the students fell ill on Sunday, but the school authorities tried to cover up the incident by not taking them to the hospital for treatment and instead treated them at the Gurukul without informing anyone.
The incident came to light on Monday after four students, whose condition turned serious in the morning hours, were shifted to Government Area Hospital. Another 11 students were shifted to the hospital in the evening after they complained of stomach ache and vomiting.
When media persons tried to visit the Gurukul, the staff locked the gate saying that no one was allowed to enter the school premises. The staff even stopped police and doctors who reached the Gurukul to check the students’ condition for a while.
The local BRS leaders K Nageswara Rao, Kunta Laxman, Patnam Rambabu, Yadagiri Goud, Mudangula Krishna, Avula Srinivas and others complained that when they went to the Gurukul to know about the health condition of the students, they were not allowed into the school.
The BRS district president Rega Kantha Rao visited the hospital and interacted with the students and their parents. He also spoke to the doctors and asked them to ensure better treatment for the students. He took a staff member to task for serving outside food to the students.
He demanded serious action against the Gurukul authorities and staff for acting negligently. Manuguru tahsildar Addanki Naresh visited the hospital and inquired about the health condition of the students undergoing treatment at the area hospital.
