Hyderabad: On an afternoon in 2015, the SR Nagar police received information that a woman had been murdered inside her apartment in AG Quarters, Colony.

Police patrols rushed to the spot, followed by senior officers, the clues team, dog squad and detectives. As investigators fanned out across the apartment complex in search of clues, few would have imagined that the case would remain unsolved more than a decade later.

It has been over ten years since the murder of the 40-year-old woman, but despite an extensive investigation involving multiple police teams, repeated review of evidence and the examination of several leads, neither the identity of the killer nor the motive behind the crime has been established.

The victim had sustained a fatal head injury, allegedly inflicted with a blunt object. Investigators believe the assailant attacked her inside the house and later dragged the body into a bedroom before leaving the premises, possibly in an attempt to delay its discovery.

What added to the mystery was the apparent absence of witnesses. A security guard was on duty at the apartment complex but reportedly neither heard any commotion nor noticed anyone behaving suspiciously. The family also owned a pet Pomeranian, but it offered no clue that could help investigators reconstruct the sequence of events.

The victim’s husband was serving as an Accounts Officer in the Accountant General’s office at the time of the incident. Their son, who was present in the house, was reportedly suffering from mental health issues, limiting the investigators’ ability to develop useful investigative leads from his account.

Police also examined the victim’s personal background and social circle. The woman, a native of Vijayawada, had developed a keen interest in rearing birds after moving to Hyderabad.

Detectives questioned several persons and pursued every possible lead. One line of inquiry led them to the Erragadda bird market after they learnt that she frequently purchased pet birds there.

A bird trader was also questioned after investigators suspected he might have had some connection with the case. However, that lead, like several others, failed to produce any breakthrough.

Over the years, investigators revisited the case, re-examined evidence and pursued fresh leads in the hope that advances in forensic science or new information would help solve the crime. Yet, despite sustained efforts, the investigation has not yielded conclusive evidence.

Today, the AG Colony murder continues to figure among Hyderabad’s unresolved homicide cases. For investigators, it remains a file awaiting the one lead that could finally reveal what happened inside the apartment on that afternoon in 2015.
