Adilabad: Adivasis observe World Indigenous People’s Day
Ethnic tribes unfurled their traditional flags and vowed to protect their culture and traditions in junctions at mandal centres and villages in Adilabad as part of the celebrations

Adilabad: Adivasis in the erstwhile Adilabad district observed World Indigenous People’s Day on a colourful note on Monday. Special programmes and presentation of traditional dance forms were organised by the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA) in Utnoor mandal centre to mark the occasion.
The ethnic tribes unfurled their traditional flags and vowed to protect their culture and traditions in junctions at mandal centres and villages as part of the celebrations. They recalled the heroic deeds of their legends such as Kumram Bheem and Ramji Gond and paid tributes to the two. Their leaders stressed the need to rededicate themselves to achieve their rights on land, water and forest.
In Utnoor mandal centre, ZIlla Parishad chairperson Rathod Janardhan said Statehood for Telangana was achieved on the demand of jobs, water and funds. He stated that the government was implementing a slew of programmes for the welfare of tribals, and cited the setting up of Kumram Bheem memorial and tribal museum in Jodeghat valley at a cost of Rs 25 crore as example.
District Collector Sikta Patnaik requested the ethnic tribes to bring to the notice of the authorities concerned the major problems they faced. She said efforts were on to improve the standard of education which was affected by the Covid-19 triggered lockdown. She urged the tribals to be cautious of the impending third wave of Coronavirus and asked them to wear face masks.
ITDA Utnoor project officer Bhavesh Misra said that developmental activities were unfortunately hindered by Covid 19 pandemic. He assured to address challenges of tribals if brought to his notice. He stated that 500 candidates were selected by the agency for giving coaching helping them to perform well in examinations held for recruiting placements with the police department.
In-charge Superintendent of Police M Rajesh Chandra said that police administration would resolve problems of the tribals if shared with cops. He stated that the government would fill up vacant posts of police department soon and the department would extend its support to tribal youngsters in cracking jobs. He advised the candidates to utilise the opportunity.
Meanwhile, Asifabad MLA Athram Sakku, participating in a programme, said that the government was giving paramount importance to the growth of aboriginal tribals. He was joined by Zilla Parishad Chairperson Kova Laxmi. Collector Rahul Raj, Additional Collector Varun Reddy, in-charge Superintendent of Police YVS Sudheendra and many others were present.
Rallies and paying homage to Kumram Bheem and Ramji Gond were witnessed in mandal centres and towns in Mancherial and Nirmal districts.
