70-year-old man was cured of heart failure by doctors at AIG Hospitals, using a new non-surgical heart pump called IMPELLA, a US-FDA approved device
Hyderabad: A 70-year-old man, who had earlier undergone a liver transplant, was cured of heart failure and severely decreased heart pumping by doctors at AIG Hospitals, using a new non-surgical heart pump called IMPELLA, a US-FDA approved device which is also known as the world’s smallest heart pump.
The patient, who was admitted on June 14 with complaints of breathlessness, chest pain, and severe weakness, was stabilised and an angiogram was done which further revealed all three main arteries of the heart severely blocked, including left main coronary artery. The comorbidities list of the patient was long with post liver transplant, diabetes, hypertension, anemia, and acute kidney injury.
A multidisciplinary team led by Interventional Cardiologists Dr Anuj Kapadia, Dr Rajeev Menon, Dr Swaroop Bharadi, and Dr Uday Kiran Anne, inserted the IMPELLA device into the heart through the groin artery under local anesthesia, which helped in stabilising heart function and ensuring blood flow to critical organs during the 3-hour procedure.
The device replicates the pumping function of the heart. The device was removed at the end of the procedure, and the patient was discharged after two more days of hospitalisation, according to Dr D Nageshwar Reddy, Chairman, AIG Hospitals.
