Warangal: Amid rising tensions over the election of chairperson and vice-chairperson for Thorrur municipality, the BRS lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission (SEC) accusing Warangal MP Kadiyam Kavya of registering as an ex-officio member in two civic bodies in violation of rules. Kavya, who was sworn in as MP and as an ex-officio member of the Warangal Municipal Corporation, was subsequently registered as an ex-officio member in Thorrur municipality as well.
The BRS urged the SEC to initiate strict action, terming the move a violation of the election code.
Speaking after lodging complaint, BRS legal cell member Lalitha Reddy stated that the law mandates a 30-day notice for such registration. “Instead, it was processed within two days, enabling her to vote. This is legally untenable,” she said.
BRS leader Kishore Goud accused the ruling Congress of misusing power by pumping money and resorting to intimidation in municipalities where the party lacked clear numbers. He said similar tactics were being used in Ibrahimpatnam and Thorrur.
In Thorrur, the BRS won 9 of 16 wards against Congress party’s 7 wards. The tally was levelled after ex-officio votes of the local MLA and MP were added. The BRS alleged that Kavya’s inclusion was pushed through due to political pressures, despite initial objections from officials.
Tensions escalated after Congress MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy allegedly blocked BRS councillors from reaching the oath-taking venue. Heavy police deployment and prohibitory orders were imposed around the municipal office amid mounting political friction.
