Hyderabad: BRS MPs KR Suresh Reddy and Divakonda Damodar Rao on Friday lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission of India, alleging large-scale violations of the Model Code of Conduct by the Congress government in the run-up to the Jubilee Hills by-election.
They urged the ECI to conduct the bypoll directly under the supervision of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to ensure a free and fair election.
In their second representation to the Chief Election Commissioner in Delhi after a similar one on Thursday, the BRS MPs accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and several Ministers of openly misusing official machinery and government resources to influence voters, fearing defeat in the bypoll. They said the police in Hyderabad were acting under political pressure and working in favour of the ruling Congress.
“Given the biased conduct of local police officials, only central forces can guarantee impartiality,” Suresh Reddy said. He also urged the ECI to increase surveillance with live streaming of polling.
The MPs also pointed out that a significant proportion of voters in Jubilee Hills were women and demanded that polling stations in such areas be staffed by female officers to prevent irregularities. “If female voters are not handled by female officers, there is a high risk of fraudulent or forced voting,” they cautioned.
The ECI assured the delegation that the issue would be examined and necessary action taken to maintain fairness during polling.
Meanwhile, the BRS lodged another complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana against Housing Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy for announcing 4,000 houses for urban poor in Jubilee Hills constituency.
The party delegation comprising Palle Ravikumar Goud, Mohammed Yousuf, and other leaders said the announcement was made in violation of the Model Code of Conduct as the bypoll was underway.
They also accused the Minister of misusing his Ministerial position to influence voters and demanded disciplinary action barring him from election campaign.
