Bullet Survivor review: A nostalgic tower defense shooter that blends strategy, RPG mechanics

Bullet Survivor combines classic arcade shooting with tower defense and RPG progression to create an enjoyable mobile experience. While repetitive gameplay eventually reduces the challenge, its nostalgic visuals, satisfying upgrades, and strategic power-up system make it a worthwhile free-to-play Android title.

Hyderabad: When a tower defense game attempts to blend strategy with RPG elements, it always makes for an intriguing combination. So, when Bullet Survivor appeared on the Google Play early access list, I clicked on it without hesitation.

In many ways, the game is as simple as classic MS-DOS era shooters like DemonStar, Galaga, or Sky Force – where you point and shoot – but it is also replete with nostalgia and quirky level-up mechanics.

In terms of gameplay, you are expected to take down overwhelmingly large caterpillars by dealing as much damage to them as possible. Occasionally, the caterpillars’ body segments carry treasure chests, and defeating those sections earns you power-ups. You need to be strategic with your positioning to maximise damage, as well as deliberate when picking up power-ups; clearing levels here comes down to chaining those power-ups effectively. When lined up well, they can deal massive damage, turning the screen into a brilliant, colourful spectacle.

Visuals and simplicity aside, much of the game revolves around strategy, careful positioning, and maximising your upgrades outside of the levels. There is a well-thought-out progression system featuring gear, weapons, and various combat enhancements that make clearing levels noticeably easier.

Bonus levels also provide opportunities to gather resources and blueprints – elements essential for leveling up your gear. Ultimately, there are plenty of rewards for players committed to the grind, offering many possibilities to power up quickly.

Despite its gentle learning curve, nostalgia-centric design, and engaging combat mechanics, not all is perfect with Bullet Survivor. After a certain point, the game virtually plays itself, turning itself into an idle shooter where strategy and spatial awareness take a back seat.

Staring at the chaotic, oversaturated screen grows monotonous after a while, and no matter how brightly it glitters, there is very little unpredictability left to keep you hooked. It would have been quite compelling if the caterpillars could actually fight back, for instance.

These few shortcomings aside, Bullet Survivor is a great free-to-play experience with ample room for strategy building. Make sure to give it a shot if you’re looking for a simple game to pass the time while in transit. Could be a great game for the metro, maybe?

* What Stands Out:

– The modern take on classic shooter games like DemonStar and Galaga is well done. I especially like the addition of RPG elements outside of the levels.

– The aesthetic design, while wonky and characteristically blocky, lends a great nostalgic feel. By blending modern strategy mechanics with classic arcade elements, the overall experience becomes quite compelling.

* Fails to impress

– The UI and menus are a bit too clunky and cumbersome – at times, there’s just a lot going on with the home screen.

– The gentle learning curve dips quite quickly after the first few levels, and the stat scaling for damage and power-ups starts to lose its impact after a certain point.
