Adilabad: Owners of chicken shops are organising festivals to dispel doubts of the public over consuming chicken in erstwhile Adilabad district in recent times.
The recent decline in sales of chicken has led to the shop owners struggling to pay rents of shops and pay salaries of staffers. K Bhaskar Rao, an owner of an outlet in Mancherial town stated that they were planning to organise the festivals to allay apprehensions of the public and to mitigate the losses.
He said that sales of broiler variety chicken dropped down by 50 per cent, while other varieties of the meat saw a nominal fall, leaving an adverse impact on the outlets.
Around 500 outlets are operated in erstwhile Adilabad district. They import birds from poultries of Kaimnagar, Siddipet, Hyderabad and Nalgonda.
Meanwhile, owners conducted a mega chicken and egg mela in Kagaznagar town by closing their shops on Friday, cooking various dishes using 250 kilograms of the meat and 2,000 eggs. They invited the public to consume the dishes. A large number of people enthusiastically participated in the event.
The organisers said the fear was irrational and one could prepare any dishes using chicken since any harmful virus would die after heating the meat at 70 degrees.
