Mancherial: In a tragic incident on Sankranti festival, Chinese manja used in flying kites claimed the life of a daily wage earner when he was riding a motorcycle in old Mancherial on Saturday.
Mancherial Inspector B Narayana Naik said the deceased was V Bheemaiah (39, a daily wage earner and native of Gollapalli village in Jagtial district.
Bheemaiah started bleeding profusely when the manja cut his throat, resulting in instantaneous death. He and his wife were proceeding to Luxettipet from Mancherial when the tragedy took place. His wife watched him helplessly as he bled to death. The incident sent shock waves among the denizens of the district.
The scene of the woman wailing at the accident site was heart-wrenching for onlookers, and incident went viral on social media platforms. While environmentalists expressed concern over usage of Chinese manja, others rebuked officials concerned for negligence in checking the menace.
Based on a complaint lodged by the wife, a case was registered and investigations got underway.
On Monday, led by Narayana Naik, police launched a special drive to curb the use of Chinese manja in several parts of the town. He warned of stern action against those who sell Chinese manja.
