Hyderabad: Cybercrime fraudster gangs are now targeting entertainment lovers with fraudulent OTT subscription offers, tricking them into clicking malicious links and installing harmful applications.

While a genuine annual subscription on various popular OTT platforms costs around Rs 1,499, it is learnt that fraudsters are circulating messages on WhatsApp, Telegram, and other social media platforms promising the same package for just Rs 500. Believing these offers, unsuspecting users are falling prey to scams that lead to their bank accounts being emptied within minutes.

Investigations show that the fraudsters are distributing APK files and remote access apps like AnyDesk through these links. “Once installed, malware secretly enters the victim’s device, giving cybercriminals access to banking details, PAN, Aadhaar, photos, and other sensitive information,” said D Kavitha, DCP, Cybercrime.

Further, cyber officials caution that even simple Google searches for OTT subscriptions can be misleading, as criminals are running fake advertisements that appear at the top of search results. Clicking these ads often redirects users to WhatsApp chats operated by scammers.

The fraud is not limited to financial data theft. Experts warn that OTT subscribers’ details, including phone numbers, email IDs, and subscription history, are being leaked and misused by organised cybercrime networks.

What is an APK file?

An APK file, also known as an Android Package, is the official format used to install applications on Android devices. It bundles everything an app needs, right from code, resources and permissions, all into a single package.

When apps are downloaded from the Google Play Store, the APK installs automatically. However, users can also side-load APKs from third-party sources. While this allows access to apps not on the Play Store, it carries risks unverified APKs may contain malware.

In simple terms, an APK is the installer file that powers every Android app on your phone.

Safety Advisory:

*Payments for OTT subscriptions should be made only through official websites or apps.

*Avoid downloading third-party APK files or apps promising free or discounted content.

*Any message offering unlimited free content or heavily discounted subscriptions should be treated as suspicious.

* Report such fraudulent messages immediately to the Cybercrime Helpline 1930 or the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
