Hyderabad: The cyber fraudsters have gone a step ahead and are now targeting people by sending fake notices in the name of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C) to extort money from individuals and institutions.
According to the police, the fraudsters are sending fake notices allegedly incriminating individuals of their involvement in illegal foreign currency transactions, accessing online child pornography, and informing that criminal cases are registered against them.
“The fraudsters threaten the victim with arrest warrants and legal proceedings against them. And demand money to drop the charges,” said an official of Telangana Cyber Security Wing.
In a few instances, the fraudsters send messages to the victims asking them to respond within 24 hours through WhatsApp or email, threatening legal action in case of failure.
The police have advised people not to click on suspicious links or share bank details with unknown persons. If such messages are received, the public should immediately report them by calling the cyber helpline:1930 or through the portal of the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the police said.
The police advised the public that in case they are duped, they should report the cyber fraud within the first two hours to the authorities to increase the chances of recovering the lost money.
